This is our first newsletter in this cycle, and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you.
We are Latinas in Construction, a nonprofit created to bring Latinas together in a space where we can learn, grow, and transform our lives (and our world) into something amazing, together.
Many of us come from imperfect places, but we share the same determination: to create better opportunities for our families and ourselves.
We are not a large organization with a huge budget. We’re a small group of people giving our hearts to make a real difference in the lives of others.
There's a saying we love: "What you're not changing, you're choosing,". And we're choosing change.
Another quote inspires us, too: "The forest would be very silent if only the bird that sings best sang." We believe every voice matters—and together, our voices create something powerful.
We are building a future where women can work, succeed and grow in construction. A future where – even if you are the only woman among thirty men – you never feel alone or invisible.
A future where your voice counts, where you understand your surroundings and act with confidence, and where we all look out for each other.

Chesapeake Insurance: Supporting Hispanic Women in Construction
We’d like to introduce you to Chesapeake Insurance, a nonprofit organization in Maryland dedicated to supporting Hispanic women and their families. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and commitment.
If you or your family run a construction business with employees, it’s important to know that Worker’s Compensation insurance is mandatory. Chesapeake Insurance is not only an excellent option to meet this requirement, but also a way to access exclusive benefits created for the Hispanic community.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be hosting an introductory Zoom event where you can learn more about these benefits and how they can help strengthen and protect your company.
Caring is Loving:Skin Cancer and the Hispanic Population
Protecting our families from skin cancer is an act of love. One fact we must all know: Hispanics have a higher death rate from melanoma.
Melanoma is a dangerous but treatable type of skin cancer—especially when detected early. According to the National Library of Medicine (NIH), the incidence of melanoma among Hispanics has increased by 20% in the past two decades. Compared to white populations, Hispanics are often diagnosed at a younger age, with more advanced tumors, and with lower survival rates.
Although the overall incidence of skin cancer is lower among Hispanics than Caucasians, mortality is higher in our community.
Why this disparity?
- 1. Limited knowledge of risks and symptoms, with little information available in Spanish or adapted to our culture.
- 2. Less use of sun protection practices, often linked to cultural assimilation (*).
- 3. Limited access to health insurance: more than 15% of Hispanics lack coverage, delaying early detection and treatment.
Hispanic construction and landscaping workers are particularly exposed to the sun, increasing their risk of skin cancer over time. Lack of awareness and preventive action leads to illnesses and deaths that could be avoided.
That’s why, at Latinas in Construction, we partnered with Dr. Alejandra Hurtado de Mendoza and her team at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center on the SOLAR Project—an initiative that promotes skin cancer prevention among Hispanic outdoor workers.
As part of this effort, an educational video has been produced to raise awareness and encourage our community to protect themselves. The video will be released soon and will be available on our website and social media.
It’s your job, mujer, to care for yourself and your family.
Skin cancer may appear 5, 10, or even 20 years after sun exposure, and damage builds up over time.
At Latinas in Construction, we want to see you strong, healthy, and happy, so take protective measures starting today.
