Prepare to get your Maryland Contractor's License

The first thing you must do in order to work as a General Contractor in Maryland is to register your business. Even if your business is registered in another State, you must register it in Maryland. Working without authorization or without a valid business license can lead to fines and penalties.
Once you have registered your business in the State, you can submit the application to obtain the General Contractor’s license.
   1. Commercial License:
It is awarded by the Circuit Court of the county where the business is registered, and it is valid for 1 year, after that period, the license can be renewed every year. Applicants don’t have to pass any exam, but the must complete an application and pay a small fee.
   2. Residential License (Home Improvement):
To obtain a Maryland Home Improvement license, applicants must take the 8-hours class to prepare for the exam and buy the book.  The exam has 55 questions. A minimum of 39 correct answers (70%) is required to pass. The exam lasts 150 minutes, that means applicants have less than 3 minutes per question. The exam is with open book.
